An Introduction to Rational Mysticism
Rational mysticism is the deliberate attempt to bring the rigour of reasoned inquiry to the territory traditionally claimed by mystical experience. It rejects the assumption that the contemplative and the analytical mind must occupy separate rooms, sealed off from one another by temperament or tradition. Instead, it proposes that direct experience of consciousness, unity, or transcendence can be examined honestly, described carefully, and integrated into a worldview that remains accountable to evidence and logic.
The tradition has deep roots. Plotinus reasoned his way towards the One. Spinoza derived his ecstatic vision of God-or-Nature through geometric proofs. William James, in The Varieties of Religious Experience, treated mystical states as data worthy of serious psychological study. More recently, writers such as Aldous Huxley, Sam Harris, and Bernardo Kastrup have argued that contemplative insight need not require supernatural commitments to be taken seriously.
